Mapleton City is nestled against the majestic foothills of Sierra Bonita Mountain in the Wasatch Range. A unique community having the advantage of 60 percent of the land being undeveloped within the corporate boundaries of the City. The rural atmosphere combined with the friendliness of its citizens have attracted an influx of new residents to the area. The current population is approximately 6,500 with the State projecting a population of 20,000 in the Year 2020. To avoid jeopardizing the open space ambiance and spectacular views in every direction, the City has been and will be pro-active in its planning scope to accommodate diversified residential, commercial, and recreational interests.

Location

Mapleton location: about one hour South of Salt Lake City and about ten minutes South of Provo on I-15. It lies at the foot of Sierra Bonita Mountain. Springville is to the North and Spanish Fork is to the West.

Mapleton history:

The first permanent settlers came to Mapleton about 1870. A rural community, it was founded in 1900 as Union Bench. Maple Canyon and Hobble Creek Canyon offer scenic drives. To the east of Mapleton is Sierra Bonita Mountain.
The town was originally known as "Union Bench" until 1901, when the name was changed to Mapleton.  Mapleton was officially incorporated in 1948.

Mapleton Town Square includes the 1941 LDS ward building, a park, the 1910 town hall and pioneer homes.

General Information

In its early days, Mapleton was mainly a farming and orchard community. Many early settlers planted cherry orchards on the area's north bench. Now, much of the city's farmland and many of its orchards have been converted into residential subdivisions, and the city is more of a bedroom community.

With a 5% average annual rate of growth, Mapleton has experienced a steady increase of population during the last decade. When compared with other Utah County cities, Mapleton's median age and average household size are about average.

Origin of City's Name

An outgrowth of Springville, the city was named after the groves of maple trees in the area. It was originally called Union Bench by a group of early settlers who grazed livestock on the bench south of Springville.

The majestic mountain that serves as the city's backdrop is known throughout Utah County as Mapleton Mountain. However, some Mapleton residents call it Sierra Bonita, as named by a group of Ute Indians. The name means beautiful mountain, and geography experts say it is one of the best shaped in the country.
